Sponsored reporting
Support multimedia reporting and analysis that surfaces important developments, practices, and questions across civic science.
We work with organizations, funders, and institutions on sponsored reporting, strategic visibility, and collaborative initiatives that make civic science more accessible and actionable.
Connect with usThrough civic science journalism, our community of contributing correspondents and analysts documents how civic science manifests across programs, institutions, and communities. Through thought-provoking multimedia interviews, they capture how practitioners design and implement their work in real time. They then translate these observations into shared insight that makes the work more visible, accessible, and actionable for decision-makers across the field, and ultimately the broader publics.
Three common pathways for working with the Civic Science Media Lab.
Support multimedia reporting and analysis that surfaces important developments, practices, and questions across civic science.
Work with us on interview series, editorial initiatives, public-facing resources, and other mission-aligned collaborations.
Help relevant audiences discover your work through curated features, distribution, and ecosystem-facing storytelling.
We serve a growing community of civic science practitioners, including scientists, science communicators, educators, policymakers, funders, and community leaders.
Our work is designed to support those building and funding civic science by making emerging practices visible, sharing lessons across contexts, and providing insights that inform more effective and coordinated action.
The CSML network produces video, audio, photography, and digital print that document the practice of civic science.
Together, we have developed several new multimedia programs, launched new interview series, hosted summer interns and fellows, and constructed new repositories. Support from individual donors, sponsors, and in-kind contributors enables this work to continue and expand. Explore some example case studies below:
Schmidt Sciences and the UC Santa Cruz Science Communication Program provided a catalyst grant to support the launch of Science Engaged.
The audio program is hosted by Dr. Kristel Tjandra and features conversations with scientists who have worked with local communities on participatory science projects.
Season 1 includes 6โ8 episodes on the CSML network. View program
The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYC EDC) partnered with the Civic Science Media Lab to document lessons from civic science initiatives it has supported across New York City.
Through this partnership, we produced a limited interview series embedded within our Questions of the Day video program, featuring grantees reflecting on their work, challenges, and lessons learned. View series.
The series included 8 in-depth interviews (~30โ40 minutes each), creating a public record of these projects and making their insights accessible beyond the original funding period.
The Lasker Foundation and Research!America partnered with the Civic Science Media Lab on a two-year project to generate a clearer picture of the public engagement training landscape in the United States.
Through this partnership, we conducted interviews, convened panel discussions, and analyzed public data to examine how training opportunities are structured across the country.
The project resulted in a public dashboard and accompanying report, creating a resource that helps stakeholders better navigate the landscape. View project
The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) provided a $35,000 grant to support the formal launch of the Civic Science Media Labโs internship program.
Through this support, interns produced in-depth thought pieces that contributed to ongoing discussions and informed future coverage across video, radio, and digital print.
The funding supported two cohorts of interns between 2021 and 2022, with 11 interns participating in total. View program.
A growing group of organizations has partnered with us to support civic science journalism, reporting, programs, field-building, and public-facing resources.
The examples above are just some of the ways of partnering with us which include sponsoring interview series across our programs, co-developing new multimedia programs, supporting correspondents focused on specific areas of civic science, funding database development projects, and promoting relevant opportunities (grants, jobs, and events) to our audience (see guidance here). Ultimately, these partnerships collectively help us build the core infrastructure for self-sustaining civic science journalism.
