The CSML Internship Program offers undergraduate and graduate students from any field the opportunity to practice civic science solutions journalism. Interns investigate developments across science communication, participatory science, informal science, science policy, and related areas.
Frame questions that reveal emerging solutions and uncover lessons from civic science practice.
Explore developments shaping the field through reporting, interviews, and analysis.
Turn original investigation into accessible stories for practitioners and broader publics.

Time, space, and community to explore civic science
The main goal of the program is to give interns the time, space, and community to critically explore the landscape of civic science.
Send a résumé and story pitches
Email the lab director at f.muindi@northeastern.edu with your CV or résumé and a pitch for two or three investigative stories you would like to pursue. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Explore past intern stories.

The current iteration is open to students across the worldwide network of Northeastern University campuses. If you are outside Northeastern, please still reach out to express your interest.

Practice civic science journalism with one-to-one mentorship
Lab members help interns sharpen questions, develop interviews, interpret what they learn, and shape their reporting for publication.
Frame better questions
Identify questions that reveal emerging solutions and lessons from practice.
Report in context
Interview people and investigate developments across civic science fields.
Share useful insight
Translate observations into stories that make the field easier to understand.
I care deeply about my neighborhood back home (Harlem), and it was a real joy to learn about an organization doing great work to uplift my community there.
I had a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Conducting the interviews was one of the most rewarding parts of the internship.
