Internship Program

CSML Summer Internship

Launched in June 2020, the CSML Summer Internship offers undergrad and grad students from any field the opportunity to practice civic science solutions journalism. Interns investigate developments across civic science areas such as science communication, participatory science, informal science, science policy, and others. With 1:1 mentorship from lab members, interns learn to frame the kinds of questions that reveal emerging solutions, uncover lessons from practice, and identify developments that are shaping the field.

The main goal of the program is to give interns the time, space, and community to critically explore the landscape of civic science.

Apply

If interested, please email the lab director at f.muindi@northeastern.edu with your CV or resume, and a pitch for 2-3 potential investigative stories you would like to pursue during your internship. Applications are accepted throughout the year. See the list of past stories from interns here.

Eligibility

Please note the current iteration of the internship is only open to students across the network of Northeastern University campuses around the world. If you are outside Northeastern, please do still reach out to express your interest.

Intern Reflections

What interns are saying

โ€œI care deeply about my neighborhood back home (Harlem) and it was a real joy to be able to learn about an organization that is doing great work to uplift my community there.โ€

Gitana Savage (2025) Northeastern University

โ€œI had a transformative experience that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Conducting the actual interviews turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of the internship.โ€
