Multimedia science communicator Niba Nirmal provides an inside look into how ’NotesByNiba’ works
In this interview on Questions of the Day, the Founder of @NotesByNiba recounts her evolution from a graduate student dabbling in science communication to building an engaging platform that makes science accessible and relatable. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “I realized I liked talking about science more than doing it.” Her content explores diverse topics anchored largely around the plant sciences. “Plants are always out here doing the most,” she quips, describing their adaptations and relevance in areas like skincare and sustainability.
Niba highlights the importance of meeting audiences where they are, particularly on digital platforms, and balancing creativity with algorithm demands. Sharing her creative process, she notes, “If you’re not interested in your topic, it’s going to be pretty hard to get someone else interested in it too.” The discussion also delves into the challenges of funding, collaborations with scientists, and the iterative nature of content creation.
Despite hurdles, Niba emphasizes her passion: “Creating is something I want to keep doing… I want to make sure it’s something I continue to enjoy.”

Fanuel Muindi is a former neuroscientist turned civic science scholar-journalist and entrepreneur. He is a Professor of Practice in the College of Arts, Media, and Design at Northeastern University where he leads the Civic Science Media Lab. Dr. Muindi received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and PhD in Organismal Biology from Morehouse College and Stanford University respectively. He completed his postdoctoral training at MIT.
