Forest Stewards is a non-profit corporation affiliated with Western Carolina University created to promote and implement forest stewardship in the Appalachians.

Forest Stewards is a non-profit, associated entity of the University of North Carolina System housed on the campus of Western Carolina University. We are seeking an Executive Director to provide leadership in achieving our dual mission of promoting sound resource management and providing robust experiential learning opportunities for university students. Forest Stewards was created in 2008, and we are active in the stewardship of public, tribal, and family lands. As examples, we play a lead role in assessing prescribed fire effects for the Southern Blue Ridge Fire Learning Network and Pisgah Restoration Initiative. We also design and implement stewardship treatments in the Waynesville (NC) municipal watershed and on lands held by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

The former Executive Director will serve as a mentor and resource for the initial 6 to 9 months to aid the selected candidate in learning about our organization and operations.

Position description:ย The Executive Director will oversee all operational, strategic, and administrative functions of the organization. Key responsibilities include:

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic plans that support the organizationโ€™s dual mission of promoting sound resource management and providing robust experiential learning opportunities for university students.
  • Oversee project development and implementation including meeting with current and potential partners, approving contracts, assisting with project work, and ensuring timely completion.
  • Make public presentations to partners and others in a variety of forums.
  • Supervise and support Forest Stewards staff and student interns.
  • Facilitate collaborations with university faculty.
  • Oversee project scheduling and fiscal activity including budgeting and payroll.
  • Ensure the organization remains in compliance with policies and regulations.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience in project leadership, budgeting, and personnel supervision
  • Action oriented with excellent communication and people skills
  • MS degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline
  • Registered Forester in North Carolina (or equivalent education and experience)
  • Knowledge of the management of southern Appalachian forests
