SUMMARY:Preconference: The “Dark Side” of social conversations around science - Contemporary challenges and potential solutions for science communication
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 2 June 2026\, 09:00 – 17:00 (Central African Time)\nVenue: Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation (CERI) at Stellenbosch University (main campus)\, South Africa \nScience communication plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions and informing policy responses to today’s most pressing challenges\, ranging from health and environmental crises to the societal implications of rapid technological advancements. Yet\, the field faces growing pressures and complex threats\, including economic and political interference\, rapidly changing media ecosystems\, and public or political backlash against science and scientists. This preconference (the 4th ICA Science Communication Preconference) seeks to explore these darker dimensions of science communication and to identify constructive\, evidenceinformed ways forward. We invite theoretical\, empirical\, and practice-based contributions that reflect on how the science communication community can respond to these challenges\, and whether current efforts are adequate\, inclusive\, and effective. \nBackground Science communication encompasses all forms of communication about scientific knowledge and practice by actors both within and outside the scientific community (Schäfer et al.\, 2019). As Bucchi and Trench (2021) describe\, it involves curating and sustaining “social conversations around science” that engage scientists\, journalists\, policymakers\, businesses\, and citizens. Such conversations potentially shape scientific discourse and culture in different directions (Vogt\, 2012). In recent years\, several trends have intensified the challenges facing science communication\, including: ● the rise of digital and hybrid media (Krause et al.\, 2025; Mede et al.\, 2025; Righetti et al.\, 2022; Taddicken & Krämer\, 2021); ● evolving societal expectations of science and changes in trust and deference to scientific authority (Cologna et al.\, 2025; Bucchi & Schäfer\, 2025; Department of Science and Innovation\, 2025); ● the politicisation of science (Rajan et al.\, 2025) and the epistemisation of politics (Bogner\, 2021); ● the emergence of anti-pluralist and populist movements (Bellolio\, 2022; Naseemullah & Chhibber\, 2024; Kinzelbach et al.\, 2025); and ● the rise of mis- and disinformation\, as well as fake news (Gondwe et al.\, 2025; Wasserman and Madrid-Morales\, 2019). Together\, these developments fuel hostility toward science\, manifesting as political attacks\, online harassment\, the spread of pseudo-scientific misinformation and conspiracy theories\, and the amplification of anti-science narratives by powerful actors such as celebrities and influencers. Scientists and communicators often face these pressures with limited institutional support or protection. The result is an uneven communication landscape that reinforces global and structural inequalities in who can participate in\, and benefit from\, science communication.

SUMMARY:DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous: Human Exploration of Mars
DESCRIPTION:Human Exploration of Mars \nImagining the human exploration of Mars depends on creative inquiry across the arts\, sciences\, and engineering\, where speculation is essential in the face of profound unknowns. What role does imagination play in exploring realms beyond Earth? This cross-disciplinary panel examines how imaginative thinking informs research\, drives technical development\, and supports the collective effort to envision human life beyond our planet. \nIn connection with the recent release of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine report\, A Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars (2025)\, join us for a D.C. Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) on the Human Exploration of Mars. The program will include short talks by four speakers\, community sharing\, audience discussion and Q & A\, and a reception. \nFeaturing \nRichelle Ellis\, Artist\, Analog Astronaut\, Co-founder of Inploration \nPascal Lee\, Planetary Scientist and Artist\, SETI Institute \nDava J. Newman\, Apollo Program Professor of Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Aeronautics and Astronautics\, a Harvard–MIT Health\, Sciences\, and Technology faculty member\, and former director of the MIT Media Lab\, and former NASA Deputy Administrator \nCarolyn Russo\, Museum Specialist and Curator of the Art Collection\, Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum \nAbout DASER \nDC Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) is organized to explore several key questions: What are the relationships among art\, science\, technology\, culture\, and all related disciplines or systems of understanding? How do these disciplines relate to one another to foster creativity\, innovation\, and discovery? What are the tangible results of these interactions? DASER aims to create community and discussion around the intersection of art and science. \nDASER is organized by Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Leonardo\, the International Society for the Arts\, Sciences\, and Technology. The thoughts and opinions expressed in the DASER events are those of the speakers and do not necessarily reflect the positions of the National Academy of Sciences or of Leonardo. \nAbout the Study \nA Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars outlines how future campaigns can advance the highest-priority scientific goals for understanding the Red Planet and preparing for sustained human exploration. The report identifies opportunities to search for signs of life beyond Earth\, reveal how planets evolve\, and test systems and resources that can support humans far from home. The NASA-sponsored study was directed by the staff of the Center for Advancing Science and Technology (CAST) Aeronautics\, Space\, and Astronomy (ASA) Program Area\, Dr. Abigail Sheffer and Dr. Kelsie Krafton. The study was co-chaired by Dr. Lindy Elkins-Tanton and Dr. Dava Newman.

SUMMARY:Special Screening of Observer at the Avalon Theater
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Goodwin\, PhD\, Executive Director of the Science Communication Lab as well as Executive Producer of OBSERVER and series host Jason Dick\, Editor in Chief of Roll Call\, discuss why simple observation of natural phenomenon is so important and how it can lead to a deeper understanding of not just the subject matter but the people\, culture and broader world around it. \nAbout the Film: In OBSERVER\, filmmaker Ian Cheney embarks on an experiment in which he brings a series of keen-eyed observers – scientists\, artists\, a hunter – to a range of locations around the world\, often without telling them where they are going\, and asks them simply to describe what they see. What unfolds is a deep exploration and celebration of the power of observation: what happens when you find new ways to sense and perceive the world around you? With customary whimsy and a small painted red square that Cheney brings on every journey\, the film is an invitation to viewers to find beauty and meaning in even the most quotidian of locales. \nONE SHOW ONLY! Wednesday\, December 3 @ 7:30PM in Avalon 1 \nAbout the Speakers: \nSarah Goodwin\, PhD\, is the Executive Director of the Science Communication Lab\, where she has worked with hundreds of scientists from around the world to produce videos\, short films\, and feature documentaries to demystify the nature of science and illuminate the many personalities and backgrounds of scientists. SUMMARY:Visualization in Science and Education (Gordon Research Conference)
DESCRIPTION:Application Information\n\n\nApplications for this meeting must be submitted by June 15\, 2025. Please apply early\, as some meetings become oversubscribed (full) before this deadline. If the meeting is oversubscribed\, it will be stated here. Note: Applications for oversubscribed meetings will only be considered by the conference chair if more seats become available due to cancellations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Description\n\n\nThe Visualization in Science and Education GRC is a premier\, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research\, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes a diverse range of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide\, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities\, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks\, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages\, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field. \n\nThe 2025 Gordon Research Conference on Visualization in Science and Education will continue the tradition of bringing together a multi-disciplinary group including researchers from the social and natural sciences\, artists\, technologists\, journalists\, educators from formal and informal settings\, and others engaged in the production\, study\, and application of visualizations to advance and promote scientific understanding. The theme for the 2025 conference is “Visualization for Impact\,” which is designed to explore an array of transdisciplinary and multi-dimensional topics such as machine learning and visualization\, visualization for impact in AR/VR/XR\, visualization for action and social good\, visualization for education (literacy\, activities\, pedagogy)\, visualization of earth and environmental science\, and visualization of uncertainty and qualitative data. The conference will explore Visualization for Impact as a means of inspiring change\, influencing policies\, and informing better and smarter decision-making. The Gordon Research Conference offers an ideal format for examining such topics due to its residential setting and highly collaborative atmosphere that promotes discovery of new intersections between fields. In the 2025 Gordon Research Conference on Visualization in Science and Education\, speakers will apply technical\, ethical\, artistic\, scientific\, educational and philosophical lenses as to how visualizations can clarify or intensify the uncertainty inherent in natural\, engineered\, social\, and biological data. We will also consider how the mind understands complex data and how visualizations support or obstruct mental models. We will apply the collective wisdom of speakers and participants to understand how visualizations can impact both scientific analysis and public decision making around pressing socio-scientific issues. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis GRC will be held in conjunction with the “Visualization in Science and Education” Gordon Research Seminar (GRS). Those interested in attending both meetings must submit an application for the GRS in addition to an application for the GRC. Refer to the associated GRS program page for more information. \n\nConference Program\nThe topics\, speakers\, and discussion leaders for the conference sessions are displayed below. The conference chair is currently developing their detailed program\, which will include the complete meeting schedule\, as well as the talk titles for all speakers. The detailed program will be available by March 15\, 2025. Please check back for updates. \n\n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Science-informed policies and decision-making are critical to ensuring a healthy\, prosperous\, and equitable future. Relationships of trust between scientists and policymakers are foundational to science-informed decision-making. We must work towards an ecosystem where the expertise of scientists and engineers is put to work collaboratively with policymakers and communicators to better identify and address future challenges and opportunities. Whether climate change\, public health\, or the responsible use of artificial intelligence\, science alone cannot solve the most pressing issues of our time. Only when scientists and policy-makers trust and collaborate with one another at the local\, national\, and global levels can the greatest challenges of our time be overcome. \nThe 2025 AAAS Annual Meeting—Science Shaping Tomorrow— invites us to celebrate and strengthen the projects and collaborations among science\, policy\, and communication that already exist and promote the infusion of scientific and technical expertise into the public discourse and policymaking. We will highlight not only the responses to challenges and crises\, but also marvel at what our future could be.
